The Minister of State for Law (Assoc. Prof. Ho Peng Kee): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move,
That this Parliament, in accordance with Section 4 of the Foreshores Act (Cap 113) approves the proposed additional reclamation by the Government of approximately 1,908 ha of foreshore and seabed south of Tuas View as shown coloured pink on the plan marked 'LAND OFFICE RECLAMATION PLAN NO 5/99', which is deposited in the Land Office, Singapore.
Sir, Parliament at its sitting on 27th February 1996 approved the reclama- tion of about 372.6 hectares of foreshore and seabed at Tuas View to meet the increasing demand for industrial land in Singapore. The reclamation work is now in progress and is expected to be completed by the 4th Quarter of 1999. This land has been committed for general, pharmaceutical and utilities use and will be taken up almost immediately upon completion of the reclamation.
It is recognized that the industrial land on the mainland could run out as early as year 2001/2002. As such, there is an urgent need to create more land by reclaiming Tuas View Extension to build up the supply of industrial land. Jurong Town Corporation proposes to reclaim additional land south of Tuas View as shown coloured pink on the plan marked "LAND OFFICE RECLAMATION PLAN NO 5/99", a copy of which is displayed in the Library of this House for the reference of hon. Members. The proposed reclamation will yield an additional 1,908 hectares of land for industrial development and also for the siting of four major utilities, namely, a desalination plant, a wastewater treatment plant, an incineration plant and a power station.
The Jurong Town Corporation will be appointed as agent of the Government to oversee the reclamation works. The reclamation works will commence in the 2nd Quarter 2000 and will be completed by end of 2006.
Sir, I beg to move.
Question put, and agreed to.
