Mr Goh Tong Liang asked the Minister for Communications and Works what steps does he propose to take to improve the roads and telephone communications in the rural areas.

Mr Francis Thomas: The need to improve roads in rural areas is recognized by the Government, and it is the policy of the Government to assist local authorities, where necessary, to carry out their responsibilities for such roads.

The provision of telephone services is the function of the Singapore Telephone Board, established under the Singapore Telephone Board Ordinance, 1953. The Board is aware of the needs of the rural areas for improved services, and the development plans which the Board is now formulating will include provision for these areas.
