LECTURE BLOCK, TEACHERS' TRAINING COLLEGE (Electricity Supply)

Mr John Ede asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the new lecture block now in use at the Teachers' Training College has been without electricity for the past six months since its completion, and what steps are being taken in this matter.

Mr Chew Swee Kee: Yes, I am aware that the Teachers' Training College has been without electricity for about six months since its completion. The City Council demanded a monthly payment of $1,080 before it would agree to connect up the supply. It is estimated that the actual consumption would be only $300 a month and the Department had been trying to persuade the City Council to modify its demand, but without success. To avoid further inconvenience, it was recently decided to accept the City Council's terms.
