Inche Mohd. Ali Bin Alwi asked the Minister for Finance to state the terms of service (including rates of pay, gratuity, pension, leave, etc.) of the personnel of the Guard and Escort Unit of the Singapore Police Force, and whether such terms of service are the same as those accorded to the Regular personnel of the Force.
Dr Goh Keng Swee: Mr Speaker, Sir, the salaries of the personnel of the Guard and Escort Unit are somewhat lower than their counterparts in the Singapore Police Force. But as regards pension, leave and other conditions of service, the conditions are identical.
Inche Mohd. Ali Bin Alwi: (In Malay): Mr Speaker, why are their rates of pay lower than those of their counterpart in the Singapore Police Force?
Dr Goh Keng Swee: Mr Speaker, Sir, members of the Guard and Escort Unit were recruited from the former Special Constabulary. Their standard of education was lower and the duties to which they will be appointed are, in general, less onerous and less exacting than those allotted to the regular police.
