Inche Mohd. Ali Bin Alwi asked the Minister for Finance to state the number of persons employed in all categories of employment in Government Departments since the Government took office, and to give the number of (1) Chinese, (2) Indians, (3) Malays and (4) others so employed.

Dr Goh Keng Swee: The number of persons in all categories whose employ- ment in the Public Service has been approved between the time when this Government took office and 31st December, 1959 is 1,104. I should mention that the final formalities following the approval of appointment may not have been completed in all cases but will have been completed in the near future.

Statistics are not normally kept to show how new appointees are distributed by race, and it is therefore regretted that the detailed particulars asked for cannot be supplied.
