Mr Poh Ber Liak asked the Minister for National Development when will street lights be installed in (a) 7 to 8¾ milestones Changi Road; and (b) 9 to 13 milestones Tampines Road.
Mr Lim Kim San: Mr Speaker, Sir, this section of Upper Changi Road from 7 to 8 3/4 milestone is affected by road reconstruction work to convert it into ---
Mr Poh Ber Liak rose ---
Mr Speaker: Order. Will the Minister please take his seat? I cannot hear the Member. Will the Member press his button? Perhaps we might then get sonic translation through. If the Member will repeat what he has just said, to make it possible to get the translation through. Before he starts speaking, I should be obliged if he would press that button of his and speak into the microphone.
Mr Poh Ber Liak: (In Mandarin): Mr Speaker, just now I was unable to hear anything from the earphones.
Mr Speaker: I hope the Member will adjust his earphones. This is the second time that he has not been able to hear. Mr Lim Kim San.
Mr Lim Kim San: Mr Speaker, Sir, just now I was saying that this section of Upper Changi Road from 7 to 8¾ milestone is affected by road reconstruction work to convert it into a dual carriage-way. I hope I am quite audible to the hon. Member now. The installation of street lighting will have to wait until such works are completed. However, a stretch of this section of Upper Changi Road, i.e. from Jalan Puay Poon to Bedok junction, has already been realigned and street lighting of this particular stretch will be put in hand by the end of this year. The existing lighting main at 9 milestone Tampines is more than three miles from the nearest electric sub-station and owing to this distance, it is not possible to extend street lighting up to the 13 milestone.
A street lighting scheme for the 9 milestone to the 13 milestone has therefore to await the completion of an electric sub-station which is to be built nearer to this section of the road. A site has been acquired near Lorong Muallap, Tampines Drive, and as soon as a sub-station at this site is completed, street lighting can be provided.
