Mr Yeo Choo Kok asked the Minister for Finance what is the present position of the ASEAN diesel engine project for Singapore.

Mr Goh Chok Tong (for the Minister for Finance): Mr Speaker, Sir, ASEAN Economic Ministers have agreed that Singapore should establish an ASEAN project to produce diesel engines of 200 horse-power and up, for non-automotive applications.

Following this agreement, the Economic Development Board (EDB) has approached leading international manufacturers of diesel engines in this range and they will be submitting detailed project studies to the EDB by about the end of March. The EDB will then evaluate these proposals and put up the most suitable project to the ASEAN Committee on Industry, Minerals and Energy for its consideration.
