Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon asked the Minister for Education how many pre-primary classes his Ministry will have by 1987; and how many more places will be available in 1987.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education (Mr Tang Guan Seng) (for the Minister for Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, I am answering on behalf of my Minister.

In 1987, 176 pre-primary classes will be available in 44 schools. The estimated enrolment would be 4,900, about the same as for 1986.

The Ministry is carrying out a comprehensive study of the pre-primary programme. The study is still in progress but it is already clear that no significant expansion of the programme can take place before 1989. This is because the new trainee teachers, who have been admitted to the Institute of Education this year, will require two years of training before they graduate.
