Mr Goh Choon Kang asked the Minister for Communications and Information whether a North-East Mass Rapid Transit route from Outram Park to Punggol is being planned.
The Minister for Communications and Information (Dr Yeo Ning Hong): Mr Speaker, Sir, it is expected that the North-East sector of Singapore will be developed for public housing after the year 2000. In line with long term land transport planning, the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation has commissioned a consultant study in December 1984 to evaluate the engineering and financial feasibility of extending the MRT system to service that sector when public housing development begins.
The study, which is being finalized by the MRTC at the moment, has evaluated a number of possible routes. The final report will be submitted in due course to the Government for consideration.
