Mr Heng Chiang Meng asked the Minister for Trade and Industry what percentage of Singapore's garment exports under quota for the years 1984 to 1986 would be categorised as Singaporean labels as opposed to "contract labels".
BG Lee Hsien Loong: The bulk (over 90%) of garments produced in Singapore are manufactured under contract for foreign designer fashion houses. Such garments would be classified as "contract labels". The volume of Singaporean labels is very small. These comprise garments from local designers who sell their products to specialty and up-market department stores as well as local manufacturers who export fashion garments under their own trademark. plan - SERANGOON NEW TOWN (Cols. 1621 - 1622)
