Mr R. Jumabhoy asked the Minister for Commerce and Industry whether he will state the tonnage (notthe value):-

(a) of total exports for each year from 1927/1937 and for each year from 1946 to end of 1955;

(b) of total imports for each year from 1927/1937 and for each year from 1946 to end of 1955;

Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: Imports and exports are declared not only by weight but also in square yards, numbers, gllons and value. Therefore, it is not possible to give an aggregate in tonnage. Figures are, however, available from 1948 onwards interms of freight tons which are based on weight or volume according to the nature of the commodity. The following figures of freight tons have been obtained in respect of 1948 to 1955 from the relevant Digests of Economic and Social Statistics published by the Chief Statistician.
