Question proposed,

"That the sum of $91,000 for Head D53 stand part of the Schedule."

Mr Lim Koon Teck (Paya Lebar): Sir, under this head provision of $91,000 is asked for the extra cost of building two boys' hostels. The estimated cost, when this scheme was proposed in 1951, was $360,000 and now the revised cost is $451,000, $91,000 extra. To my knowledge, I would concede ten per cent in the increased cost of construction, and I would like particulars as to why this $91,000 is required.

The Minister for Communications and Works (Mr Francis Thomas): I might be able to help the hon. Member, Sir, I think the estimate was made before the brief was prepared. I do not think it got into the estimates until 1955. My friend and colleague the Financial Secretary can advise on that. At that stage there was only one hostel and it was not until 1957 that they got down to two. The site has been changed from the Geylang Town Centre, of which they have still not finalised the planning. I think the concern is mainly with the Bukit Batoh site at present in this provision. The accommodation is two Division II quarters, dormitories for 50 boys, classrooms, workshops, dining-room and kitchen, playing fields, an office, septic tanks and, I suppose, some road-works. The other site, I think, is in Dunman Road and it is not finalised yet.

Question put, and agreed to.

The sum of $91,000 for Head D53 ordered to stand part of the Schedule.

Head D61 -

The sum of $62,604 for Head D61 ordered to stand part of the Schedule.

The sum of $1,553,080 for the Heads of Expenditure and for the services specified in the Schedule ordered to stand part of the motion.

Motion and Schedule reported, without Amendment.

Question on the Motion put, and agreed to.

Resolved,

That this Assembly resolves that the sum of $1,553,080 shall be supplied to the Government under the heads of expenditure and for the services specified in the Schedule contained in Sessional Paper No. Cmd. 46 of 1957.
