Mr Lim Cher Kheng asked the Minister for Commerce and Industry to state the Government's policy, and the measures already taken or contemplated, to promote and develop the fishing industry of Singapore.
Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: The Government's policy is to develop the offshore and deep sea fishing industry by encouraging joint Singapore/Japanese fishing projects which include the training of local personnel as an integral part of the projects. The conditions under which licences will be issued for such projects were publicised in the local papers on 18th September, 1957, and applications have been invited. An apprenticeship training scheme has been formulated by the Joint Advisory Council for Apprenticeship Training to ensure that the trainees will receive proper training and instruction.
