Mr Seah Peng Chuan asked the Minister for Commerce and Industry if he is aware of any opposition by ship-owners' organisations and seamen's unions to the compulsory medical examination required under the provisions of section 44 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (Cap. 207), and what action he has taken or proposes to take in the matter.

Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: I am not aware of any opposition by shipowners' organisations or seamen's unions to the principle of compulsory medical examination required under section 44 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance, Chapter 207. Subsequent to the receipt of notice of this question however I have received a letter disagreeing with this legislation from the Malayan National Seamen's Union, which union being now defunct, I propose to take no action on the letter.
