Mr Ng Yeow Chong asked the Minister for National Development and Communications if the Parks and Recreation Department will plan to plant flowering trees and plants along pavements, walkways and roadside kerbs to add more colour to our city.

The Acting Minister for National Development (Mr Ong Teng Cheong): A country-wide programme to plant trees and shrubs along pavements, walkways, roadside kerbs and open spaces is already being actively implemented. Bigger flowering trees such as the Sea Apple (Eugenia Grandis) and Yellow Flame are planted on wider pavements and walkways, while smaller flowering trees such as the Orchid Tree (Bauhinia) and the Lilac Tecoma (Tabebuia Pallida) are planted on the narrower ones. Less colourful trees such as Angsana and Rain Trees are planted to provide shade along roadsides and major highways. Climbers such as Bougainvillaea, Maiden Jealousy and Allamanda will also be planted to further beautify the walkways.
