The following question stood in the name of Dr Kanwaljit Soin -
Dr Kanwaljit Soin: To ask the Minister for Information and the Arts whether Singapore will benefit by setting up a National News Agency.
Dr Toh Keng Kiat: Question No. 14, Sir, on behalf of Dr Soin.
BG George Yong-Boon Yeo: Mr Speaker, Sir, for news coming to Singapore, our local newspapers and media organisations are able to obtain information on their own without the need for a central agency to supply them with news.
For news going out, we already have many foreign news agencies based in Singapore reporting on events here. In any case, many foreign news organisations view reports from a national news agency with scepticism.
There is therefore no need to establish a National News Agency.
