Dr Toh Keng Kiat asked the Acting Minister for National Development whether there are any plans to widen and convert Sixth Avenue into a dual carriageway as the density of residential units in the Holland Road/Bukit Timah Road area is increasing.

Dr Toh Keng Kiat: Sir, I want to declare my interest as I live in the area.

Mr Lim Hng Kiang: Mr Speaker, Sir, the PWD is aware of the growing traffic volumes along Sixth Avenue due to growth in the area. Traffic flow along Sixth Avenue is, however, satisfactory for most part of the day. Some congestion is observed during the peak periods at Sixth Avenue's junctions with Holland Road and with Bukit Timah/Dunearn Road which are both signalised junctions. The congestion is localised and is over a short period.

There are no immediate plans to widen Sixth Avenue to a dual two carriageway road. However, the PWD is studying the above two junctions to see how their capacities can be increased, such as by providing additional traffic lanes along the approaches to the junctions and adjusting the traffic lights. 2.49 pm
