Mr P. Govindaswamy asked the Minister for Education what is the Government's financial contribution to the University of Singapore for 1966; and whether he will obtain and give a breakdown of how the contribution is expended.

Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, the Government's financial contribution to the University of Singapore for 1966 is $10 million. Of this amount, about $9 million is for Personal Emoluments, the balance for honoraria, departmental grants, new equipment and other items of recurrent expenditure.

In addition, the Government has also made a provision of $450,000 for the capital development of the University of Singapore during 1966.

Mr Govindaswamy (Anson): (In Tamil): Is the administration of the University going on properly, and will the Government appoint a Commission of Inquiry to look into it?

Mr Speaker: That question does go beyond the bounds of a supplementary question, but if the Minister for Education wants to answer it, he may.

The question was whether the Government is satisfied with the administration of the University and also whether it will consider appointing a Commission of Inquiry.

Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, I have not received any complaint about maladministration of the University, I do not think the question of a Commission of Inquiry arises at this stage.
