Mr Yeo Toon Chia asked the Minister for Law and National Development if he will consider the construction of a pedestrian overhead bridge or the installation of traffic control lights and pedestrian crossing at Serangoon Road, near the Kandang Kerbau Market, to enable pedestrians to cross the road safely.
Mr E. W. Barker: Sir, the Public Works Department, in conjunction with the Traffic Police, have already considered proposals for the construction of a pedestrian overhead bridge or the installation of traffic control lights for safer pedestrian crossing at Serangoon Road near the Kandang Kerbau Market. Both proposals were rejected. It is considered undesirable to erect traffic control lights for pedestrians to cross any road too close to any junction of two roads.
As to the overhead bridge, there is not enough space for the erection of a flight of steps leading to the bridge, except possibly within the premises of the market and within the police station. However, the police consider it undesirable to erect an overhead bridge leading into the compound of a police station.
