Dr Augustine H. H. Tan asked the Minister for Law and National Development, in view of (i) the development of Jalan Toa Payoh as part of the Pan-Island Expressway and the consequent hazards to pedestrians, especially children, crossing the road, and (ii) the likely benefits to hawkers at the new hawkers' centre being built at Jalan Tenteram, if his Ministry has plans to build a pedestrian overhead bridge over Jalan Toa Payoh to be sited next to the new hawkers' centre.
Mr Barker: Sir, the Public Works Department has a proposal to construct a pedestrian overhead bridge across Jalan Toa Payoh near its junction with Kim Keat Road not only to serve pedestrians and school children, but also the hawkers' centre in the area. The bridge will be included in next year's programme and, if all goes well, it is expected to be completed by October next year.
