DEPARTMENTAL TITLES

The Minister for National Development (Mr Teh Cheang Wan): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the motion* standing in my name as it appears on the Order Paper.

*The motion reads as follows: That this Parliament, pursuant of section 3 of the Departmental Titles (Alteration) Act (Chapter 53), resolves that the Schedule to the said Act be amended by the addition under the headings of "Old Title or Name of Office" and "New Title or Name of Office" respectively of the following:-- Old Title or New Title or Name of Office Name of Office Director, Botanic Gardens ) Commissioner of Parks and ) Recreation ) Botanist, Botanic Gardens ) Deputy Commissioner of ) Parks and Recreation ) Curator, Botanic Gardens ) Assistant Commissioner of ) Parks and Recreation ) ) Curator of Parks and ) Recreation

The motion seeks to amend the following old titles of office to the current titles: Old Title or New Title or Name of Office Name of Office Director, Botanic Gardens ) Commissioner of Parks and ) Recreation Botanist, Botanic Gardens ) Deputy Commissioner of Parks ) and Recreation Curator, Botanic Gardens ) Assistant Commissioner of Parks ) and Recreation ) Curator of Parks and Recreation

Before 1965, the Botanic Gardens was a unit under the Ministry of National Development. In 1973, the Botanic Gardens and the Parks and Trees Unit of the Public Works Department were integrated to form the Parks and Recreation Division of the Public Works Department. In 1976, the Parks and Recreation Department became a separate department, i.e., the Parks and Recreation Department, under the Ministry. Consequent to these changes, the titles of office have been re-designated. Hence it is necessary to amend the old titles to the new titles.
