Mr Lim Choon Mong asked the Chief Minister if he will make a statement on his discussions with the Chief Minister of the Federation of Malaya on the subject of Union with the Federation; and whether he will further state what are the Government's intentions regarding such a union.

The Chief Minister: Yes. Sir, it had been my intention - and I have made it public - to make a full statement to this Assembly on this matter in connection with various interviews that some of my colleagues and I have had with the Chief Minister of the Federation and some of his colleagues on an informal basis. I would add, Sir, that I have reason now to believe that it would be highly inadvisable to make any statement at this juncture and until I have had a further opportunity, with some of my colleagues, to see the Chief Minister of the Federation on his return. I would ask this House, which is aware that I have always dealt with it fully and frankly, to give me its indulgence and to be patient for just one month. This is a matter that is very vital to the welfare of Singapore and I say, Sir, do not let us try to deal with it at this precise moment when it is still in the balance.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew: What is in the balance, Sir?

The Chief Minister: It may well be, Sir, that as a result of the forthcoming discussions, there may be other decisions arrived at than have already been arrived at. I do know, Sir, that there is a desire on the part of the Federation that this matter should not be preceded with today.
