GOVERNMENT SCHOOL TEACHERS (RECRUITMENT)

Mr Lim Cher Kheng asked the Minister for Education whether teachers for Government Schools are being recruited from Hong Kong; and whether he will give full particulars regarding the methods of recruitment.

Mr Chew Swee Kee: One of the purposes of my visit to Hong Kong was to find out if there were experienced and reliable teachers in Chinese there who might be available for service in Singapore. About 60 teachers were interviewed of whom eight were selected for further consideration if local suitable candidates cannot be found. All appointments are made by the Governor on the advice of the Public Services Commission.
