Mr William Tan asked the Minister for Communications and Works whether he will cause announcements over the public-address system at the Singapore Airport to be made also in Mandarin.
Mr Francis Thomas: Since 23rd February, 1957, announcements have been made in Malay of all arrivals at and departures from the Singapore Airport of aircraft operated by Malayan Airways Limited.
With one exception (which was the case of a German transit passenger) no evidence has been adduced to shew that passengers have either missed their plane or have embarked on the wrong plane by reason of their inability to understand announcements in the languages at present employed.
It is not therefore proposed at present to make announcements in Mandarin.
