Mr W. A. C. Goode, pursuant to his reply to the following question for oral answer asked on 13th February, 1957 (Official Report, 13th February, 1957, Volume 2, No. 19, Column 1393):

Mr David Marshall asked the Chief Secretary whether he will make available to the English-reading public of Singapore by public subscription the Information Services' Daily Digest of Non-English Press,

supplied the following answer on 5th March, 1957:-

I promised in the Legislative Assembly in February to let you have a proper answer to your question on making available to the public the Daily Digest produced by the Information Services. I am sorry that I have not succeeded in sending this letter within the fortnight I promised.

As you probably know, the main purpose of the Digest is to keep Government Departments and Ministries informed of views, news and comment about Government policies as reported in the vernacular newspapers. We have been able to provide copies in addition to diplomatic representatives and a number of business firms, who pay a subscription.

I regret, however, that it would not be possible to increase the number of copies produced daily so as to make it available to the general public on application. You will, I hope, appreciate that there is a limit to the number of copies which can be produced on a duplicating machine in the time available each evening.
