Mr Lim Choon Mong asked the Minister for Commerce and Industry what are the reasons for the delay in setting up a central wholesale fish market.
Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: Mr Speaker, Sir, the delay is due to the difficulty of getting a suitable site for the market.
There is only one suitable site in the city area which is still unutilised, and that is at the end of the old Kallang Airport runway, but this area has been earmarked by the Planning Co-ordinating Committee for development as a public park by the City Council.
The conflicting interests have therefore to be sorted out and the matter is now under consideration by Government.
Mr Lim Choon Mong: When will Government complete consideration of these things and when will work start on this new market?
Mr J. M. Jumabhoy: When the conflicting interests are sorted out, Sir.
