Mrs Seow Peck Leng asked the Minister for National Development how many fiats, houses, tenements, shops and markets did the Singapore Improvement Trust start building in 1959, how many of these were completed in that year, and how many were still under construction in December, 1959.

Dr Toh Chin Chye: Construction of 670 flats, 191 houses, 280 tenements, 11 shops and two markets commenced in 1959. None of these were completed during the year and therefore the same number were still under construction in December, 1959.
