Mrs Seow Peck Leng asked the Minister for Finance how many Government servants applied for Government loans to build houses from 1st June, 1959, to 31st May, 1960; how many of these loans were approved; and how many such houses were built and occupied by the applicants.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance (Mr Low Por Tuck) (for the Minister for Finance): Mr Speaker, Sir, I have been asked to reply. Twenty-one Government servants applied for loans to build houses from 1st June, 1959, to 31st May, 1960. Fourteen of these applications were approved. Eight houses were built and occupied, and six are under construction.

Mrs Seow Peck Leng: Sir, can I take it for granted that the seven applications not approved were because they were not eligible?

Mr Low Por Tuck: Those seven were withdrawn.
