Mrs Seow Peck Leng asked the Minister for Labour and Law what is the latest estimated number of unemployed persons in Singapore.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Labour and Law (Mr Wee Toon Boon) (for the Minister for Labour and Law): Mr Speaker, Sir, I have been asked to reply. The number of persons registered with the Employment Exchange as at 30th June, 1960, is 58,214. This figure includes those in part-time employment and those already employed full-time but have registered themselves with the Exchange in the hope of getting better jobs. It is impossible to say what percentage these two categories constitute.

Mrs Seow Peck Leng: Mr Speaker, Sir, I wonder whether the hon. Member can tell us whether there are many more who have not registered and are unemployed.

Mr Speaker: I think that is a hypothetical question, unless the Parliamentary Secretary wishes to reply.

Mr Wee Toon Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, the Ministry finds it difficult to assess the actual position of unemployment.
