Mrs Seow Peck Leng asked the Minister for Health whether any new blocks had been built as extensions of the General Hospital, Kandang Kerbau Maternity Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 1959.
Dr Sheng Nam Chin: Mr Speaker, Sir, I have been asked to reply. The answer to the question is "Yes".
Mrs Seow Peck Leng: Mr Speaker, Sir, can the Parliamentary Secretary enlighten us as to which hospitals have been extended?
Dr Sheng Nam Chin: Mr Speaker, Sir, the following hospitals have been extended:- General Hospital: New block for the Treatment of Burns Unit, 40 beds; Housemen's flats; and the Orthopaedic Extension Unit. Kandang Kerbau Hospital: Gynaecological Block was in the process of construction. There was no addition or extension to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Mrs Seow Peck Leng: Mr Speaker, Sir, I wonder whether the hon. Member is able to tell us when these were started.
Dr Sheng Nam Chin: Mr Speaker, Sir, in the case of the Treatment of Burns Unit, the project was completed in 1959. It was started before that. The Housemen's flats were also completed in 1959 and started before 1959. The Orthopaedic Extension Unit, however, was in the process of being completed in 1959. It was started in that year.
Mrs Seow Peck Leng: Mr Speaker, Sir, am I right in assuming that only the Orthopaedic Unit was started in 1959 and not the others?
Dr Sheng Nam Chin: That is right.
