Mr Tan Cheng Tong asked the Minister for Home Affairs whether he is aware of frequent traffic accidents occurring in front of the market in Jalan Kayu, and whether he will take steps to provide a zebra-crossing there.

Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, I am informed that out of a total of 24 traffic accidents occurring in Jalan Kayu in 1962, only three minor accidents took place outside the market.

In the first 4 months of 1963 there were 8 traffic accidents in Jalan Kayu, none of which took place in front of the market.

In the light of this information, there does not appear to be any basis for the Member for Jalan Kayu's statement that there have been frequent traffic accidents occurring in front of the market in Jalan Kayu. However, consideration will be given to the desirability or otherwise of providing a pedestrian crossing at the vicinity of the market.
