Mr Tan Cheng Tong asked the Minister for Labour how many television sets have been installed in the community centres, from what companies were these sets purchased, the total cost involved, and from what funds was the cost met.

No Minister rising -

Mr Speaker: Is there a Minister for Labour in the House?

The Minister for Labour (Mr Ong Pang Boon): Mr Speaker, Sir, up to date 75 television sets have been installed in community centres. The sets were purchased from ten different companies at a total cost of $43,570.10, which was met from funds of the People's Association.

Mr Tee Kim Leng: (In Mandarin): Mr Speaker, Sir, how were these television sets purchased? Were they purchased through tenders or otherwise?

Mr Ong Pang Boon: Mr Speaker, Sir, all television dealers were invited to submit quotations, and the cheapest quotation with the usual one-year guarantee was accepted. The policy was to give every manufacturer a chance to sell some sets to the community centres provided the price came within the cheapest quotation.
