Mr A. P. Rajah (Farrer Park): Could the Minister tell us how long these categories of flats will be occupied?

Mr Tan Kia Gan: They will be occupied until such time as permanent barracks are built, Sir.

Mr Rajah: The Minister agrees then that to that extent the public are being denied housing?

Mr Tan Kia Gan: Sir, we have an adequate number of fiats to allocate to Singapore citizens who require housing. We have made this arrangement because, as we all know, after 31st August, 1963, the police and the military forces will come under Central Government control. This is a temporary arrangement and, as I have said, when permanent barracks are fully built, they will evacuate from the fiats.
