FIRST-YEAR STUDENT-TEACHERS IN TEACHERS' TRAINING COLLEGE

Mr Teo Hock Guan asked the Minister for Education, in regard to first-year student-teachers now in the Teachers' Training College for the year 1963, what is (a) their total number; (b) the number in the various streams of education; and (c) the number in the Chinese stream who are graduates respectively of Senior Middle III and Secondary IV under the new system.

(a) The total number of first-year students in the Teachers' Training College as at 31st May, 1963, is 2,363.

(b) The break-down according language media is as follows:- (i) English medium 1,550 (ii) Chinese medium 668 (iii) Malay medium 134 (iv) Tamil medium 11 ----- Total 2,363 -----

(c) Of the 668 first-year students in the Chinese medium, 125 are university graduates, 428 passed the Government Senior Middle III Certificate and 115 passed the Government Secondary IV Certificate.
