'Free the innocent, try all others'

7

Mr William Tan asked the Chief Secretary whether, in view of the uneasiness and grave concern of trade unionists and Chinese-school teachers and students at the arrests by the Police in August and September this year under the Preservation of Public Security and Banishment Ordinances, he will take steps for the early release of the innocent and give all other persons arrested an opportunity to answer the Government's allegations against them in open court.

The Acting Chief Secretary (Mr S. T. Stewart): Sir, the hon. Member is well aware of the reasons why these two Ordinances are on the Statute Book. All persons arrested thereunder are dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.

Mr William Tan: Has the Government any concrete proof that these people are engaging in subversive activities?

Mr Speaker: Is that not a matter, which is of its nature secret? Unless the Hon. Minister wishes to reply, he need not reply.

Mr Stewart: The information is secret.
