Mr William Tan asked the Minister for Labour and Welfare to state the numbers of men, women, boys and girls registered at the Government Employment Exchange as unemployed as at 30th September, 1957.

Dr Lim Yew Hock: Persons registered at the Employment Exchange on 30th September, 1957, are as follows:- Men 5,926 Women 976 Boys (14 years-18years) 681 Girls(14 years-18years) 147 ----- 7,730 -----

As there is no statutory obligation to register for employment, nor any requirement that those registered should be only unemployed persons, the list does not give the whole picture. For instance, many of those registered may already be gainfully employed, but wish to transfer to other jobs. Again, others may be in part-time occupations or in training.
