QUADRUPLET OF CHE MARKANAH BINTE AHMAT (Government Assistance)

Mr Lee Choon Eng asked the Minister for Labour and Welfare if he will state what assistance the Government has provided for the quadruplet of Che Markanah binte Ahmat, apart from the monthly allowance of $30 from the Silver Jubilee Fund for a period of six months.

Mr Braga: I would like to know where the hon. Member got his information from because it is incorrect that any monthly allowance of $30 was made to the lady in question from the Silver Jubilee Fund.

After the birth of the quadruplets on 23rd December, 1957, a single grant of $40 was made from Government funds to Inche Kasban bin Sabet, the father of the quadruplets.

Mr Lee Choon Eng: Sir, is the Government going to help this poor lady in the maintenance of the quadruplets?

Mr Braga: As the public assistance scheme does not provide for the payment of monthly allowances to persons in full-time employment, no further assistance can be made to Inche Kasban's family.
