Mr Goh Tong Liang asked the Minister for Education-

(a) when is it intended to begin registering children for admission to grant-in-aid vernacular schools for 1959; and

(b) what is the reason for not holding this registration simultaneously with that for English schools.

Mr Chew Swee Kee: Sir, the answers to the two points raised by the Member for Bukit Panjang are:

(a) registration of children for admission to grant-in-aid vernacular schools is carried out independently by the principals concerned; and

(b) the reason for not including this registration simultaneously with that for English schools is to give grant-in-aid vernacular schools as much liberty as possible in the matter.
