Mr William Tan asked the Minister for Labour and Welfare whether the Government will consider waiving the visa fees charged by the Immigration Department in respect of newly registered Singapore citizens applying for travel documents.
Mr Braga: No, Sir. Until the amendment to the British Nationality Act of 1948 is made which will give Singapore citizenship international status, visas are required for newly registered Singapore citizens. When the amendment to the British Nationality Act is made, Singapore passports will be issued to newly registered citizens and visas will then no longer be required.
Mr William Tan: Is the Minister aware that under the Fees Ordinance the Government has the power to waive visa fees in respect of re-entry permits submitted by these residents?
Mr Braga: I am quite aware of that and this question will be considered when the amendment is made to the British Nationality Act.
Mr R. Jumabhoy: When is the amendment expected?
Mr Braga: I am not a prophet.
Mr R. Jumabhoy: Is it not the duty of the Government to press for the amendment in order to give all the facilities to the people of Singapore?
