Mr R. Jumabhoy asked the Minister for Local Government, Lands and Housing what steps, so far, have been taken to alleviate flooding in the Telok Ayer Division (Circular Road, Boat Quay, Market Street, Robinson Road) since his question on this subject in July 1955.
Inche Abdul Hamid Bin Haji Jumat: Mr Speaker, Sir, in reply to a similar question in July 1955, the hon. Member was informed that schemes to alleviate flooding in the areas in question have been included in the City Council's five-year programme. This is still the case. Sir, but the City Council consider that a reappraisal of the original scheme is necessary in the light of the recommendations by both the Singapore River Working Committee and the Chief Drainage Engineer.
Mr R. Jumabhoy: Sir, how long will it take to implement this scheme in this area?
Inche Abdul Hamid: Mr Speaker, in my reply just now, I did indicate to the Member for Telok Ayer that this is purely a matter for the City Council and I am therefore unable to give any specific date.
