Mr Teong Eng Siong asked the Minister for National Development and Communications whether the authority plans to build various types of shop premises for those affected by urban renewal projects, e.g. bigger shops for wholesale dealers.
Mr Lim Kim San: Mr Speaker, Sir, different types of shops are built to cater for different trades affected by resettlement in the Central Area, e.g. shopping and office complexes, industrial workshops, wholesale market, etc. There are shops of different sizes to cater for the different requirements of resettlement cases. Those who want bigger premises can have more than one unit to meet their needs.
But I must qualify this by saying that a resettlement case is entitled to rental concession for the number of shops owned or occupied prior to clearance, i.e. if a resettled case owns two shops previously, he will be entitled to rental concession for two shops upon clearance. However, market rental will be charged for additional units over and above what his entitlement is.
