Haji Rahmat bin Kenap asked the Minister for Law, the Environment and Science and Technology whether sympathetic consideration will be given to the joint appeal of the cooked food hawkers who had been moved from Lorong Engku Aman to the back lane between Guillemard Road and Lorong 42 to be re-sited in Lorong Engku Aman until work on redevelopment projects in that area is about to commence.
Mr Chor Yeok Eng (for the Minister for Law, the Environment and Science and Technology): ( In Mandarin): Sir, the hawkers have been resited because of development work along the road. There are no anti-pollution facilities along Lorong Engku Aman. The other reason is that Lorong Engku Aman has become a busy link road with the conversion of Geylang Road and Sims Avenue into one-way roads. Resiting the hawkers back to Lorong Engku Aman will cause obstruction to traffic.
The Ministry will be providing anti-pollution facilities for hawkers resited at the back- lane between Guillemard Road and Lorong 42. If the hawkers are not happy with the new site and are willing to change their trades, they could apply for vacant stalls in existing markets/food centres.
