Mr Ng Yeow Chong asked the Minister for Culture whether it is intended to change some of the odd and peculiar transliterations in Chinese of street names, adopted during the colonial days, with correctly translated versions.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Culture (Dr Ow Chin Hock) (for the Minister for Culture): Mr Speaker, Sir, the answer is yes. My Ministry intends to ask the Street Names Committee to review the transliterations in Chinese of street names adopted during the colonial days. For the information of the Member, however, I must mention that all street names boards in respect of new streets as well as replacement boards will be in English only.
