Mr Lim Cher Kheng asked the Chief Minister when the new Register of Electors for Legislative Assembly elections under the proposed new Constitution for Singapore will be ready; and what is the earliest practicable date for the holding of a General Election under the new Constitution.

The Chief Minister: Sir, provided there are no major mechanical breakdowns or other unforeseen difficulties, the Registers of Electors for the Legislative Assembly elections under the proposed new Constitution for Singapore will be ready for inspection by the first week of June 1958. On this timetable, the earliest practicable date for holding elections will be the end of September 1958.

The answer to the second part of this question is dependent on the stand to be taken by this Assembly when it debates the motion on compulsory voting standing in the name of the hon. Member.
