Mr Goh Tong Liang asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the question of the recognition or otherwise of the Nanyang and other foreign University degrees.

Mr Chew Swee Kee: Sir, I have no statement to make on the recognition of foreign university degrees generally. Government is interested in this question only in the context of recognition for the purpose of entry into the public service. The Public Service Commission have set up a Committee to advise on this matter and the Committee has been functioning for the last few months.

The question of Nanyang University degrees has been raised by the Chairman of the Executive Council of that University, who has proposed the appointment of a commission to examine the standards of the University, and this commission is in the course of being appointed.
