Mr Seah Peng Chuan asked the Attorney-General:-

(a) whether the Singapore Government has engaged Mr G. N. Cross, Q.C., from London for the purpose of prosecuting a case in the Singapore Assize Court, on behalf of the Singapore Government; and whether he will state the reasons for such action; and

(b) whether the cost of passages from and to London and accommodation in Singapore for, and fees of Mr G. N. Cross are being paid by the Singapore Government; and what will be the total cost involved.

Mr E. P. Shanks: Sir, the answers to the first part of the question are yes, Sir; this was a case of unusual complexity and it was considered that it could best be handled by the counsel engaged. For the second part of the question, the answers are yes, Sir; approximately $33,000.

Mr Seah Peng Chuan: Do I understand, Sir, that there is no one capable here - either the Hon. the Attorney-General or a member of the Singapore Bar - who can prosecute the case for the Government?

Mr Speaker: It is a matter of opinion.
