Official Report, 22 April 1958, Vol 6, Issue 2 · Open in the reader (summaries, search, filters)
Mr Lim Cher Kheng asked the Minister for Education, in regard to the salary scales of teachers in Chinese schools:-
(a) whether the Government is considering a revision of the salary scales;
(b) since when has the question o a revision been under consideration; and
(c) what progress has been made in the matter to date, and when can the revision be finalised.
Mr Chew Swee Kee: The Hon. Member for Changi seems to be confused about the issue of salaries of teachers in Chinese schools. The problem of salaries of teachers in Chinese schools is not as clear-cut as it is suggested in the three parts to his question.
The question of a revision of salaries for teachers in Chinese schools was mooted when the full-aid scheme came into operation as far back as December 1954. Since then the majority of teachers in Chinese schools have had their salaries revised, but there are still a number of them who have claimed recognition in one form or another, such as those with experience but without qualifications and those with academic but not professional qualifications and so on. It is difficult to state exactly when the revision can be completed but I want to assure the Hon. Member that I am as anxious to get this matter settled early as anybody else.
